Nigeria's Port Reforms Aim to Boost Maritime Efficiency

The Nigerian government's reform agenda in the maritime sector, spearheaded by Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola, is gaining traction as the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), led by Managing Director Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, accelerates the modernization of the nation's seaports. Key initiatives include the National Single Window and Port Community System, aimed at improving operational efficiency and positioning Nigeria as West Africa's preferred maritime gateway.

The reconstruction of major ports, specifically Apapa and Tin Can Island, is set to begin in Q3 2026, with a projected completion timeline of late 2030. The NPA has introduced measures to tackle congestion and enhance cargo evacuation, including the enforcement of the "Eto" electronic truck call-up system.

A multi-agency task force was launched in July 2026 to address illegal extortion and overlapping security duties. The overall goal is to significantly boost cargo handling capacity, reduce logistics costs, and attract foreign investment.
