CSOs Cancel Protests, Back Umahi After Habila's Death

The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (GFSJGG) announced the withdrawal of planned nationwide protests concerning the death of Mary Habila, reaffirming their commitment to due process and the rule of law. They expressed confidence in Minister Engr.

David Umahi, who addressed journalists on behalf of the coalition in Abuja on Monday. The coalition's decision to cancel protests scheduled for July 23-24, 2026, followed an independent investigation that concluded there was no basis for holding Umahi accountable for Habila's death, which was attributed to underlying medical conditions.

The coalition emphasized the importance of allowing law enforcement agencies to conduct their investigations without external pressure and condemned premature public judgments. They acknowledged Umahi's record in public service and called for respect for the due process of law.

The coalition extended condolences to Habila's family and urged political actors not to exploit the incident for partisan purposes.
