Media Attacks on Egbetokun Linked to Police Reforms

Security analyst and retired Commissioner of Police Tajudeen Oladel disclosed that ongoing media attacks against former Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, particularly on online platforms like Sahara Report, are driven by entrenched interests opposing police reforms in Nigeria. Oladel criticized the sustained negative reports during Egbetokun's tenure, linking them to individuals and groups uncomfortable with institutional reforms aimed at restoring discipline and accountability within the Nigerian Police Force.

He noted that major controversies arose during this period, including attempts by cadet force entrants to remain in service beyond their statutory years, which were ruled against by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria. Subsequent investigations revealed that signals purportedly issued by the office of the force secretary were fabricated.

Oladel emphasized that enforcing internal discipline within the police hierarchy is central to Egbetokun's leadership approach, while also alleging that wealthy individuals are sponsoring media campaigns to discredit him, particularly in light of proposed amendments to the Nigerian Police Act.
