Tinubu Removes Egbetokun Amid Rising Insecurity Issues

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu removed Kayode Egbetokun from his position as Deputy Inspector General of Police due to rising insecurity, including a wave of kidnappings and attacks across several states such as Kaduna, Niger, Kwara, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Adamawa. Reports indicate that state police commands had not received monthly allocations for operational and administrative purposes for six to seven months, hampering their ability to respond effectively to security threats.

This situation reportedly unsettled the President, leading to Egbetokun's removal. Tensions further escalated when Egbetokun was involved in the removal of Olatunji Disu, who was overseeing the Special Protection Unit.

Disu was subsequently reinstated, while Egbetokun faced allegations of promoting officers without meeting the necessary qualifications. This situation has dampened morale within the police force and disrupted merit-based progress.

Additionally, 39 senior officers, including Deputy and Assistant Inspectors General, are lobbying the presidency and the National Assembly to retain their positions.
