Medical Lab Scientists Oppose Health Reform Bills in Nigeria

Medical Laboratory Scientists in Nigeria, represented by the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), have expressed serious concerns regarding new health reform bills currently before the National Assembly. The bills, particularly the Executive Bill HB 2701 and its Senate counterpart, aim to amend the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria Act.

Dr. Casmir Ifeanyi, the President of AMLSN, described the proposed amendments as dangerous and a regression disguised as reform, warning that they misalign with global best practices in healthcare delivery.

The amendments seek to alter the governance structure of the MLSCN, expanding board membership to include non-specialists, which could undermine the council's regulatory authority and patient safety. Ifeanyi criticized the proposal to remove the requirement for the council's chairman to be a fellow professional, stating it could allow non-experts to control sensitive aspects of the healthcare system.

AMLSN argues that these changes violate established global standards for independent professional regulation.
