Brian Ogbo Sentenced for Manslaughter of Grandmother

Brian Ogbo, a 39-year-old Ireland-based Nigerian, was sentenced to five and a half years in prison for the manslaughter of his 82-year-old grandmother, Stella Nnadi, by the Cork Circuit Criminal Court. The incident occurred on February 23, 2025, when Ogbo, who had a history of schizophrenia, experienced a severe psychotic episode.

The court heard that Ogbo had relocated from Nigeria to Ireland in December 2024 to reunite with his mother, Rubi Ogbo, who struggled to secure adequate mental health treatment for him. On the day of the incident, Ogbo attacked his mother and subsequently broke down the bathroom door to drag his grandmother outside.

Nnadi suffered blunt force trauma to the head and died two days later on February 25, 2025. The defense argued that Ogbo's mental state impaired his ability to refrain from committing the act.

Judge Sinead Behan criticized the mental health system's failures, suggesting that Nnadi's death could have been prevented. Ogbo's sentence was backdated to February 27, 2025, when he was first remanded in custody.
