Kaduna Communities Demand Halt to Meter Replacement Plan

Residents of Millennium City in Chikun Local Government Area have called on Kaduna Electric to halt its proposed replacement of existing electricity meters pending the resolution of a court case. Shafik Muazu Shira, Chairman of the Ministerial Plot Housing Estate Residents Associations (MPHERA), stated that while they do not oppose the metering exercise, it must adhere to established regulations.

He expressed concerns regarding the execution of the meter replacement and a recent disconnection notice threatening the entire community over objections to the metering process. Shira emphasized the importance of complying with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Customer Protection Regulations and raised issues about the installation of meters on electricity poles.

He noted that NEMSA had conducted a technical verification of meters and identified those needing replacement. Shira sought clarification on the status of existing Meter Asset Provider (MAP) meters purchased by residents and the implications of their replacement.

He affirmed the community's support for proper metering while insisting that actions must comply with the law.
