Military Operation in Cross River Displaces 200 Families

A military operation in the Odonget community of Obubra Local Government Area, Cross River State, has raised concerns following a civil dispute that resulted in the destruction of 50 houses and the displacement of 200 families. Ebub Bruno has questioned the necessity of deploying military personnel in what appears to be a civil matter, arguing that the military's primary role is to defend national territory.

The conflict reportedly began when local youth, led by Ibrahim Musa, confronted miners over payment disputes, leading to a violent escalation. The Nigerian Army's 13 Brigade confirmed that nine aggressors were neutralized during operations on March 12-13, 2026.

Residents, including youth leader Theo Abeng, allege excessive force was used, with claims of soldiers opening fire on villagers. Kingslei Arikpo, the chairman of the local government, noted difficulties in accessing the community due to prevailing tensions.

The situation remains dire, with residents afraid to return home, as described by former town council chairman Bishop Agbor Awubi.
