Over 200 Families Displaced in Cross River Raid

In Cross River, over 200 families have been displaced due to a raid by soldiers from the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, which occurred around 1 PM last Thursday. The local community reported that the raid was connected to disputes involving illegal mining operations in the area.

Allegations surfaced that miners had requested the community to pay N1,000 for transporting mined stones, leading to tensions. The raid resulted in the destruction of 50 houses, including the burning of the village head's residence.

Reports indicate that several villagers were killed, and many others, including women, elderly individuals, and children, fled to nearby bushes for safety. Youth leader Amo Agim mentioned that approximately 500 armed soldiers occupied the village, leaving it deserted.

However, the Nigerian Army, represented by Major Yemi Sokoya, denied claims of widespread killings, stating that four civilians were killed during confrontations with armed youths who allegedly ambushed the troops, prompting reinforcements from the 245 Battalion.
