Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA recovered 33 commuters kidnapped in Tsafe after receiving intelligence and engaging armed gangs.

On August 8, 2026, a Joint Task Force North West operation in Zamfara State resulted in the recovery of 33 passengers who were being held by armed gunmen. The incident occurred in the Magazu area of Tsafe Local Government Area, where military and police units deployed based on intelligence reports intercepted the abductors while transporting their captives away from a main highway.

Every rescued individual returned unharmed, with zero fatalities or injuries reported. According to Operation FANSAN YAMMA's Media Information Officer Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, Sector 2 troops collaborated with Nigeria Police Force officers stationed in Tsafe.

Acting on credible intelligence received during late afternoon hours, security personnel learned that armed militants had captured commuters moving through the area. This information triggered an urgent mobilization enabling forces to find and confront the armed groups.

When military personnel established contact with the abductors, gunfire erupted between both sides. The clash compelled gang members to scatter from the scene, leaving their captives behind.

Military units subsequently launched tracking operations aimed at pursuing the fleeing attackers into surrounding terrain. The operation's success underscores the value of intelligence-driven approaches in the North West region, particularly given that kidnapping gangs frequently ambush travelers along major thoroughfares.

The rescue effort showcased coordination between the Joint Task Force and state-level police resources, demonstrating a consolidated security approach against regional banditry. On Sunday, one day following the operation's completion, the Media Information Officer disclosed details of the rescue.
