Nigeria Ranks Fourth in 2026 Global Terror Index

The Nigerian military has reviewed the country's position in the 2026 Global Terror Index, confirming that Nigeria ranks fourth among countries impacted by terrorism, following Pakistan, Burkina Faso, and Niger. This ranking indicates a deterioration in security, with Nigeria's position worsening from sixth in 2025 and eighth in 2023.

The report highlights a record of 750 terror-related deaths and 171 incidents in 2025, marking a 43% increase in attacks from 2024. The rise in fatalities, attributed mainly to groups like ISWAP and Boko Haram, reflects a shift in terrorist strategies targeting civilians, who accounted for 67% of deaths.

The opposition, particularly the African Democratic Congress and the People's Democratic Party, has intensified criticism of President Bola Tinubu, accusing his administration of failing to effectively tackle insecurity. They argue that the current situation reflects a breakdown in governance and a lack of prioritization of national security, calling for a proactive approach to protect lives and property.
