Nigerian Military Launches Operation Savannah Shield

The Nigerian military has committed to a sustained offensive against terrorist activities in Kwara and Niger states, launching Operation Savannah Shield in response to escalating insecurity. This initiative was inaugurated at Sobi Barrack in Ilorin, with the presence of key military leaders, including Chief of Defence Staff Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyed and Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.

The operation, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, involves deploying 30 open-back pickup trucks and armored personnel carriers to enhance security. Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State expressed gratitude for the operation, noting its significance in alleviating the fears of residents affected by banditry and terrorism.

The operation aims to dismantle criminal networks, restore law and order, and ensure the safety of lives and properties in the region, particularly around the Kainji Lake National Park, which has been a hotspot for criminal activities. The military's approach will combine kinetic and non-kinetic measures, focusing on intelligence-driven operations.
