Millions of Muslims Set for Hajj Pilgrimage to Mecca

Millions of Muslims are preparing for the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, which is set to begin following the sighting of the crescent moon in Saudi Arabia. This pilgrimage is one of the largest religious gatherings globally and represents the fifth pillar of Islam.

The Hajj is expected to occur from May 25 to May 27, 2026, although pilgrims typically arrive in Saudi Arabia a week earlier for preparations. The term "Hajj" comes from Arabic roots meaning "to intend a journey for a purpose." It is a spiritual journey that Muslims believe is a divine command mentioned in the Quran, reinforced by Prophet Muhammad's farewell pilgrimage in 632 AD.

Pilgrims enter a sacred state known as Ihram, wearing simple white garments as a symbol of humility and unity before God. Key rituals include Tawaf, circling the Kaaba, and gathering at Mount Arafat for prayer and reflection, culminating in the Eid al-Adha celebrations.
