Mining pit collapse: Ebonyi Govt begins investigation,refutes negligence claims

The Ebonyi State Government has initiated an investigation into the collapse of a mining pit in Ihietutu, Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area. The State Commissioner of Solid Minerals, Chidi Onyia, confirmed that two people lost their lives and three others were injured in the incident.

While there were allegations of negligence on the part of the company Greenfield Metals, Onyia stated that preliminary findings suggest it was a natural occurrence. The government is working with federal mine officers and security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation.

Onyia emphasized that mining, like any industry, comes with hazards, and the incident may have been a result of a natural disaster rather than negligence. The company has suspended operations at the site pending the outcome of the investigation.

Community leader Prince Fabian Chukwu also defended the company, stating that it has empowered many people in the community and has been responsible in its operations. The government is committed to ensuring transparency and holding any party responsible for recklessness.
