Plateau Mining Explosion Claims 38 Lives, 27 Injured

On Wednesday, a mining explosion in Kampanin Zurak, Bashar District, Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State, resulted in the deaths of at least 38 miners, with 27 others hospitalized due to injuries. The incident occurred around 8:00 AM when a gas cylinder exploded while miners were working in the pit.

Local leader Muhammad Ahmad reported the incident, and traditional ruler Alhaji Aliyu Adamu Idri confirmed the fatalities. Efforts to contact the local government chairman were unsuccessful, and security personnel were informed to assist in rescue operations.

The Plateau State government expressed deep shock and sadness over the tragedy, with Governor Caleb Mutfwang directing an immediate shutdown of the mine. Joyce Ramnap, the state government spokesperson, confirmed that the explosion was likely caused by a gas leak.

The government has called for a thorough investigation into the incident and emphasized the need for strict enforcement of safety standards to prevent future occurrences.
