Nigeria's Housing Sector Contributes N77 Trillion in 2025

In a statement made in Abuja, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Darma, disclosed that Nigeria’s housing and construction sector contributed more than N77 trillion to the economy in 2025. Of this, real estate services alone accounted for N41 trillion, representing 13.4 percent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

This announcement was made during a stakeholders’ validation workshop on the National Housing Data Programme and the National Housing and Built Environment Regulation Policy. Darma described the housing sector as a significant economic driver despite challenges such as weak regulation and inadequate mortgage financing.

He noted that the workshop was a critical opportunity for stakeholders to review proposed policies before they are submitted to the Federal Executive Council for approval. Darma also highlighted the need for reforms similar to those in Dubai to enhance investor confidence and protect homebuyers, addressing issues like building collapses and limited access to affordable mortgages.
