Umahi Opens Enugu-Onitsha Expressway Section, Boosts Infrastructure

On April 2, 2026, David Nweze Umahi, the Minister of Works, officially opened a completed section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, emphasizing the federal government's commitment to enhancing road infrastructure across Southeast Nigeria. During the event, Umahi highlighted the historical challenges of the road, which previously took seven hours to traverse in 2023.

The project was initiated through a tax credit arrangement involving MTN Nigeria and RCC, aimed at expediting road construction. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's intervention was crucial in renewing the direct improvement of the road's construction standards.

Umahi noted that the first 50 kilometers of reinforced concrete pavement is 97% complete, with the opening of the first 15 kilometers intended to alleviate travel difficulties during the Easter period. Several ongoing road projects across the Southeast were also outlined, including the reconstruction of roads connecting the region to Abuja and other significant routes, with various completion percentages reported for each project.
