Umahi Orders Opening of 15km Enugu–Onitsha Expressway

On March 31, 2023, David Umahi, the Minister of Works, directed the opening of a 15-kilometer section of the Enugu–Onitsha expressway to alleviate transportation challenges in the Southeast. During an inspection tour, Umahi emphasized the road's critical role in economic activities and noted its history of accidents and heavy congestion.

The expressway, which is part of a larger 214-kilometer reconstruction project, is currently 95% complete. Umahi stated that the use of concrete pavement would ensure long-term durability, contrasting with asphalt, which fails within a decade.

He also mentioned the installation of solar-powered streetlights along the corridor within a week. Umahi acknowledged the financial challenges faced by the federal government but remained optimistic about completing the project.

He highlighted the need for timely compensation payments to contractors to accelerate work. The project reflects the federal government's commitment to improving infrastructure in the Southeast.
