Nigeria's Education Minister Announces HND Reform Plans

On Wednesday, during the 23rd convocation of the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Nigerian Minister of Education, Dr. Moruf Alausa, outlined new reforms to address the long-standing Higher National Diploma (HND) dichotomy.

He called on Nigerian graduates to acquire skills and knowledge to tackle various challenges hindering national development. Alausa reaffirmed the federal government's commitment to resolving this issue through several reforms, including efforts to strengthen polytechnic degree-awarding institutions.

He disclosed that President Bola Tinubu's administration is focused on consolidating the education sector and enhancing national productivity. The reforms include a newly revised curriculum scheduled to take effect in the 2025-2026 academic session, which aims to reduce the number of subjects taught in primary and secondary schools and promote vocational skill learning.

The convocation featured 8,713 graduates, with 3,067 receiving Higher National Diplomas in various disciplines. Notably, Tijani Boluwatif Oluwaseyi emerged as the overall best graduate among HND graduates with a CGPA of 3.93.
