Nigeria Launches New Phase of TVET Reforms in London

During a visit to London, Nigeria's Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, unveiled a new phase of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) reforms.

This initiative coincided with President Bola Tinubu's engagement with senior government officials in the United Kingdom, aimed at strengthening Nigeria's educational and skill development sectors. The discussions included advancing the second phase of Nigeria's TVET reform program in collaboration with global partners and philanthropic stakeholders, particularly in the creative tourism sector.

The Minister emphasized that the federal government views technical education as a crucial driver for youth employment and economic growth, addressing the rising concerns of graduate unemployment and skill mismatches in Nigeria. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics indicates that youth unemployment and underemployment remain significant challenges, with millions of young Nigerians either jobless or engaged in low-productivity work.

Experts have repeatedly called for a renewed focus on vocational and technical training to bridge the country's skill gap, especially in construction, manufacturing, ICT, and creative industries.
