Experts Warn Against Misinformation Ahead of 2027 Elections

On Thursday, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ondo State, and CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, expressed concerns regarding unprofessional reporting in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

They spoke at an election sensitization lecture organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Tribune Chapel. Agboke highlighted the dangers of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation, which could undermine electoral integrity and public confidence.

He noted that the 2023 elections revealed significant challenges, with monitoring by DUBAWA and the Nigeria Fact-Checkers’ Coalition identifying 127 election-related claims. Agboke urged for collaboration among INEC, journalists, fact-checkers, and technology companies to combat misinformation.

He identified social media as a major channel for false information and called for enhanced fact-checking and media literacy. CP Olugbenga advised journalists to verify facts before publication and avoid sensational reporting, especially regarding electoral violence, to maintain security and respect for victims.
