Gumi Advocates for Islamic Scholars to Tackle Banditry

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, an Islamic cleric, asserted that the deployment of more credible Islamic scholars to engage with bandits in North-west Nigeria could have led to significant reductions in banditry, potentially decreasing the reliance on military operations. Gumi made this statement in a post on his official social media account, reflecting on his engagement with bandits that began in 2021.

He expressed that he could not help but imagine the outcomes had many credible Islamic scholars been systematically deployed to teach bandits about the sanctity of human life, the inviolability of property, and the Islamic prohibition against killing and oppression. Gumi's reflections come almost six years after he began preaching to bandits, highlighting the potential impact of religious engagement in addressing security challenges in the region.
