Sheikh Gumi Advocates Religious Engagement to Combat Banditry

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has advocated for the deployment of credible scholars into forests to engage armed bandits through religious education, aiming to address the ongoing security crisis in Nigeria's North-west and North-central regions. In a statement posted on Facebook on September 16, Gumi reiterated his belief that non-violent engagement is a viable method for reducing banditry.

He suggested that scholars could teach armed groups about the sanctity of human life and the Islamic prohibitions against violence. Gumi referenced his previous visits to bandits' camps in 2021, where he preached against violence and encouraged adherence to Islamic practices.

He also proposed a structured rehabilitation program offering amnesty, healthcare, and roles as forest guards for those who renounce violence. Gumi emphasized that Islamic teachings do not justify violence and urged bandits to seek legitimate means to address grievances.

He criticized the framing of bandits solely as criminals, highlighting overlooked root causes of the crisis.
