Lawmakers Set to Defect from PDP, NNPP as Assembly Resumes

As the National Assembly prepares to reconvene on March 31, 2026, a significant number of lawmakers from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) are expected to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This anticipated wave of defections is likely to further weaken the already struggling opposition parties, which are grappling with internal crises following the 2023 general elections.

Notable figures reportedly set to leave the PDP include Bamidel Salam, Clement Akanni, Mahruf Adewal, Soji Adetunji, and Mudashiru Alani from Osun State, who are expected to join the Accord Party. In Taraba State, Jaafaru Yakubu has already resigned from the PDP and is preparing to declare for the APC.

Similarly, Moham Bassi from Adamawa State is also expected to join the ruling party. The defections reflect a growing trend of shifting party loyalties in Nigeria's political landscape, with the APC currently holding 175 seats in the House of Representatives, just six short of the 181 required for a simple majority.
