MPAC Urges INEC to Reschedule 2027 Elections Amid Ramadan

The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconsider the proposed timetable for the 2027 general elections, expressing concerns that the elections may coincide with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. In a press statement issued on Sunday, MPAC highlighted that conducting nationwide elections during Ramadan could pose significant challenges for millions of Muslims who are obligated to fast.

The group noted that the physical demands of fasting, particularly in the intense heat conditions of northern Nigeria, could hinder voter turnout and create logistical delays. MPAC referenced the 2003 elections when INEC adjusted its timetable to avoid a clash with Easter observances.

The organization emphasized the importance of public trust in INEC's neutrality and called for a modest shift in the election date to ensure no religious group faces disproportionate hardship in fulfilling civic responsibilities. MPAC warned that lower voter turnout in predominantly Muslim areas could lead to indirect disenfranchisement.
