MUSLIM RIGHTS GROUP CALLS FOR REMOVAL OF INEC CHAIR

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has formally requested the intervention of the National Assembly to remove Prof. Joash Amupitan from his position as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This demand, articulated in a press release signed by the organization's founder and executive director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, stems from allegations that Amupitan has shown bias against Nigerian Muslims and has failed to address complaints raised by Islamic groups.

The organization claims that Amupitan's actions have contributed to a hostile environment for Muslim voters, particularly with the upcoming 2027 general elections in mind. They argue that the presidency has ignored their concerns, which they believe undermines the integrity of the electoral process.

The group insists that their demand is not based on religious grounds but on the need for a neutral electoral process. They have previously made similar demands without receiving a response, emphasizing the importance of addressing their grievances to ensure fair representation in the electoral system.
