Sultan of Sokoto Addresses Religious Tensions in Nigeria

The Sultan of Sokoto dismissed fears that Muslims are planning to wipe out Christians in Nigeria during the first triannual meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) held in Abuja. He noted that violent incidents attributed to religious conflict are often misunderstood, leading to increased suspicion and mistrust among Nigerians.

The Sultan urged the promotion of stability and respect, advocating for better understanding between Christians and Muslims. He warned against linking insecurity to religious issues and cautioned against false claims that could exacerbate tensions.

Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, called for stronger religious literacy among Nigerians to combat stereotypes. Georg Akum, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, emphasized the importance of understanding among religious groups for national stability and urged educational institutions to promote accurate teachings about religious worldviews.
