El-Rufai's Detention Highlights Nigeria's Democratic Challenges

Bello El-Rufai, the son of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, who is currently detained, expressed that his father's situation illustrates that Nigeria's democratic journey is far from complete. He noted that democracy thrives when leadership is accountable to the citizens.

Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State, was arrested earlier this year by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) at Abuja airport and subsequently arraigned for alleged corruption. Bello emphasized that the true test of democracy goes beyond conducting elections; it involves a commitment to the rule of law and the protection of fundamental freedoms.

He called for a recommitment to building a nation where justice prevails and the rights of every citizen are respected and protected, acknowledging the ongoing abuses of citizens' rights in Nigeria.
