N10bn Housing Initiative for Nigerian Civil Servants

The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) and the Federal Government Staff Housing Loan Board (FGSHLB) have signed a N10 billion memorandum of understanding to improve housing access for federal civil servants. This initiative aims to alleviate the burden of housing affordability, which has become increasingly challenging due to rising rents, inflation, and stagnant wages.

The collaboration will expand access to mortgage financing, home renovation loans, and rental assistance for civil servants, particularly in major cities like Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Kano. Shehu Osidi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FMBN, disclosed that the bank has already disbursed N2.6 billion in home renovation loans to 3,051 federal civil servants.

The partnership reflects a commitment to addressing Nigeria's housing deficit, estimated at 15 million units, and aims to create a structured framework for affordable housing financing. This initiative is seen as a significant welfare intervention for public workers facing financial anxiety and declining living standards.
