Senator Wadada's N210tn Discrepancy Claims Criticized

Senator Aliyu Wadada, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, faced backlash during a TV appearance discussing a N210 trillion discrepancy in the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) financial records. Critics labeled his approach as political theater, questioning the committee's credibility for making such claims without substantial evidence.

Wadada maintained that the committee sought clarification on the financial statements and demanded explanations for unexplained legal fees and rebranding costs. He highlighted the inconsistency in NNPCL's claims of N103 trillion in accrued expenses for 2023, contrasting it with the reported revenue of N24 trillion over the previous five years.

Bassei Chinedu, representing the Nigerian oil profession, urged caution in interpreting the figures, emphasizing the complexity of oil and gas accounting. He noted that NNPCL had begun publishing audited financial statements under the leadership of Mele Kyari, marking a significant step towards transparency.
