NACA Trains Journalists on HIV Awareness and PrEP

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) called on journalists to intensify public awareness of HIV prevention methods, especially pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), to enhance access to accurate information and services in Nigeria. This appeal was made by NACA's Director-General, Dr Temitope Ilori, represented by Mrs Toyin Aderibigbe, during a training session held on Monday in Lagos.

The training involved participants from various states, including Benue, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Ebonyi, Gombe, Kwara, Cross River, and the Federal Capital Territory, focusing on lenacapavir as an HIV prevention option. Dr Ilori highlighted the media's critical role in improving public understanding of HIV prevention and ensuring access to evidence-based information.

She noted that while prevention interventions are essential, accurate information is crucial for individuals to understand their options and seek services confidently. Ilori urged journalists to report responsibly on PrEP and HIV prevention, warning that sensational reporting could reinforce stigma and discourage service access.

The training aimed to equip journalists with the skills to translate technical information into accessible messages for the public.
