Senate Delays Security Summit After NAF Aircraft Crash

The Senate has announced the postponement of its National Security Summit, originally set for October 12 and 13, 2026, due to the tragic crash of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) ATR-42 aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State. The crash, which occurred on Monday, was initially reported to have resulted in 32 fatalities, including 25 officers and seven crew members.
However, NAF authorities later clarified that there were five crew members and 20 passengers on board. Senate leader and chairman of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on the National Security Summit, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, stated that the decision to defer the summit was made in honor of the victims and in solidarity with their families and the Nigerian Armed Forces.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared three days of national mourning and ordered national flags to be flown at half-mast. The Senate expressed condolences to the bereaved families and indicated that a new date for the summit would be announced later.
