NAFDAC Warns of Tampered SMA Gold Infant Milk in Kaduna

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised an alert concerning tampered SMA Gold Infant Milk following reports of a four-month-old baby in Kaduna experiencing stomach problems after consuming the product. NAFDAC's physical examination of the 900g pack of SMA Gold Infant Formula revealed clear signs of tampering, including a mismatch between the expiration date sticker and the original date printed underneath.

The agency emphasized that the safety of infant formula relies on strict compliance with regulatory requirements, and unauthorized changes to expiration dates can pose serious public health risks. Altered products may contain harmful microorganisms and degraded nutrients, particularly dangerous for infants with developing immune systems.

NAFDAC reported that the case of diarrhea in the four-month-old infant was linked to the deteriorated product, warning that such situations could lead to severe health problems, including dehydration and malnutrition. The agency urged healthcare professionals and the public to report any suspected sales of substandard or falsified products to the nearest NAFDAC office.
