NAFDAC Warns of Counterfeit Cerelac in Lagos

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians to the presence of counterfeit Cerelac Mixed Fruits products in Lagos State. This warning follows complaints received from Nestlé Nigeria PLC regarding the sale and distribution of these unregistered products, which are falsely claimed to be manufactured by Nestlé Spain.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the counterfeit products emit unusual odors, indicating possible contamination, and display tampered expiration dates, misleadingly marked as October 2026. NAFDAC's post-market surveillance team traced these products to retail outlets in Okota, Lagos, where they were subsequently removed from circulation.

The agency emphasized that these counterfeit infant formulas lack essential nutrients and may contain harmful substances, posing serious health risks, including developmental issues and infant mortality. NAFDAC is intensifying its surveillance efforts nationwide to remove these products and has urged distributors and retailers to source products only from authorized suppliers.

Consumers are advised to report any suspected counterfeit products to the nearest NAFDAC office.
