NAFDAC Issues Recall for Contaminated Infant Milk Products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians about the recall of certain batches of Aptamil and Cow & Gate infant milk formulas due to potential contamination by Bacillus cereus, a bacterium that can cause foodborne illness, particularly in infants. The recall was initiated following concerns about the presence of cereulide toxin, which can lead to symptoms such as nausea and severe vomiting.

The affected products were manufactured in Ireland and Hungary and distributed across the EU, UK, and third countries. NAFDAC emphasized that this recall does not affect Aptamil products produced specifically in Nigeria that meet Codex standards for safe consumption.

The agency has directed zonal directors and state coordinators to monitor and remove the recalled products from the market. Caregivers and healthcare providers are urged to report any suspected unregistered or illegal imports of these products to NAFDAC through its safety alert platforms.

Recently, a case in Kaduna State linked an expired product to the illness of a four-month-old infant, prompting NAFDAC to destroy unwholesome expired medical products valued at removing falsified harmful drugs from circulation.
