NAFDAC cautions as fake postinor-2 hits Nigerian market

NAFDAC has issued a warning about the presence of fake Postinor-2 emergency contraceptive pills in the Nigerian market. The agency identified two types of counterfeit versions, Type 1 and Type 2, which were not from the authorized importer, Society for Family Health (SFH).

The fake packs have noticeable errors, such as misspelled verification stickers reading "Veify" instead of "Verify" and incorrect printing of "Distributed Nigeria" instead of "distributed Nigeria." NAFDAC highlighted the differences between the fake and genuine packs, including font size and spelling errors. The agency warned that the fake pills may contain the wrong ingredients or unsafe dosages of levonorgestrel, posing risks such as contraceptive failure, harmful side effects, allergic reactions, organ damage, or even death.

NAFDAC urged the public to purchase medicine only from licensed pharmacies or healthcare providers, report any suspicious products, and assured ongoing investigations to trace the source of the counterfeit pills.
