NAFDAC Destroys N1.5 Trillion in Counterfeit Goods
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) reported the destruction of counterfeit goods valued at over N1.5 trillion during operations from May to July 2026. The agency's Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, announced that 7,210 suspected fake, falsified, substandard, and non-compliant products were mopped up, with food and water accounting for 3,633 of these.
NAFDAC visited 6,233 facilities nationwide, focusing on drugs, herbals, medical devices, and cosmetics. The agency secured 64 convictions for counterfeiting, with prison sentences ranging from one to seven years.
NAFDAC highlighted the seizure of more than 137 truckloads of counterfeit products from markets like Idumota and Onitsha between February and March 2025. In 2024, products valued at over N120 billion were destroyed, and in February 2026, N15 billion worth of fake medicines were destroyed in Ibadan.
NAFDAC emphasized the need for continuous surveillance and urged Nigerians to report violations through official channels.
