NAFDAC Collaborates with Edo Vendors to Combat Drug Abuse

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has partnered with patent medicine vendors in Edo State to address drug abuse issues. This initiative was highlighted during an anti-drug abuse workshop organized by the National Association of Patent Proprietary Medicine Dealers (NAPPM) at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.

Mitchel Ofoyeju, representing the NDLEA, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in identifying critical agents to combat substance abuse. The workshop aimed to bridge the gap between regulatory bodies and community healthcare providers, addressing the challenges posed by the illicit drug trade, particularly concerning psychoactive substances like codeine-based cough syrup.

Ofoyeju called for adherence to drug laws and ethical dispensing practices among vendors. The workshop also aimed to empower vendors with knowledge to better protect their communities from drug abuse, with plans for similar workshops in other districts of Edo State.

The initiative reflects a strategic move towards a community-centered approach in Nigeria's drug control strategy.
