Former CBN Governor Emefiele on Trial for Alleged Disobedience in Naira Redesign Case

Former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele is facing trial in the Abuja High Court for allegedly disobeying directives from former President Muhammadu Buhari regarding the redesign and local production of Naira notes. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accuses Emefiele of causing harm to the public by not following the approved procedures.

Emefiele's lawyer, Olalekan Ojo, defended his client's actions, stating that the redesign was necessary due to high counterfeit rates and a shortage of banknotes in circulation. The Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPMC) produced the redesigned notes locally, in compliance with the presidential directive.

The trial judge, Justice Maryann Anenih, ordered the prosecution to provide the defense with relevant documents for the trial, which is set to resume on February 10.
