NANS Demands Presidential Inquiry into UNIJOS Student Murder

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has demanded the establishment of a presidential panel to investigate the murder of Abel Gershon, a 300-level Geography student at the University of Jos, who was killed during an attack on March 29, 2026. The incident occurred in the Angwan Rukuba community of Jos North Local Government Area, where gunmen opened fire on a popular gathering spot.

Gershon was among several students injured, and despite initial survival efforts, he succumbed to his injuries, raising the death toll from the attack to 33. NANS, through its Lagos State chapter, commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for facilitating the evacuation of affected students and emphasized the urgent need for a panel to identify the perpetrators and ensure swift prosecution.

The group condemned the ongoing security failures that jeopardize student safety and called for decisive action to prevent further violence. The Nigerian Police, represented by Inspector General Olatunji Disu, pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice.
