NAPD Urges Pregnant Women to Prioritize Oral Health

The Nigerian Association of Paediatric (NAPD) has advised pregnant women against self-medication and stressed the importance of good oral hygiene during pregnancy. This guidance was provided during an oral health outreach at the Gynaecology Clinic of Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital in Yemetu, Ibadan, as part of the NAPD's 8th Biennial Conference, themed “Smiles for the Future: Advancing Paediatric Dental Care in an Advancing World.” NAPD President, Prof.

Odegwa Joy Eminue, highlighted that healthy teeth begin with proper nutrition, good oral hygiene, and regular dental visits. She noted that expectant mothers are more receptive to health information that benefits their unborn children.

Eminue pointed out that poor maternal oral health could lead to complications such as gum disease and premature delivery. She also discussed the prevalence of dental caries among Nigerian children, which varies by environment, and urged parents to adopt preventive oral healthcare practices.
