NAPTIP Secures 20 SGBV Convictions, Rescues 3,000 Victims

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) announced that it has secured more than 20 convictions for Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) offenses and rescued over 3,000 victims from January 2026 to the present. Mr.

Vincent Adekoye, Head of Press and Public Relations Unit at NAPTIP, revealed that three of the convictions resulted in life imprisonment, with most cases involving rape. NAPTIP has expanded its response to SGBV by collaborating with the police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and relevant ministries.

The agency is also engaging communities and training frontline responders to enhance prevention, reporting, and response to SGBV. Adekoye urged perpetrators to cease their actions, highlighting laws such as the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act and Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act.

He mentioned the establishment of an SGBV media corps to strengthen media support in combating SGBV and called for victim-centered reporting to protect survivors' dignity and privacy.
