NAS Calls for Urgent Climate Action Amid Health Risks

The Nigerian Academy of Science has called for urgent climate action as health risks intensify across Nigeria. During a media roundtable, Professor Abubakar Sambo, representing the Academy, and Professor Chinedum Babalola highlighted the direct link between climate change and worsening health challenges in the country.

Nigeria is already facing severe consequences such as recurrent floods, cholera outbreaks, and prolonged heat waves, which threaten food security and public health. Professor Babalola stressed the importance of aligning climate-related challenges with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

The Academy advocates for home-grown climate solutions tailored to Nigeria's realities, rather than relying solely on models from developed economies. Professor Babajide Alo described climate change as one of the greatest development challenges facing Nigeria, urging for stronger sub-national climate governance and local community empowerment to implement effective climate policies.

Nigeria aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 29% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.
