Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Paris Agreement Goals

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to the Paris Agreement, aiming for a low-carbon and climate-resilient development pathway to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi, the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), made this statement during the Justice and Energy Transition Roundtable organized by the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation in partnership with the Ford Foundation on Tuesday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.

The Paris Agreement, adopted by 195 Parties at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) on December 12, 2015, aims to limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C. Dr. Majekodunmi highlighted that climate action should facilitate development, expand energy access, create jobs, and improve living standards.

She urged collaboration among the private sector, development partners, and civil society to transition from commitments to implementation, advocating for innovative financing mechanisms to support climate ambitions.
