NHRC Declares Climate Change a Human Rights Crisis

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has declared climate change a significant human rights emergency in Nigeria, citing the impact of rising temperatures, floods, droughts, and displacement on the fundamental rights of millions. On Tuesday, the NHRC inaugurated the National Working Group on Human Rights and Climate Change in Abuja, aimed at centering people in Nigeria's climate response.

Chief Tony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, stated that climate change has transformed from an environmental issue to a humanitarian crisis requiring urgent action. He highlighted the plight of communities affected by climate-related disasters and emphasized the need for policies that protect vulnerable populations.

The initiative involves collaboration among the NHRC, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the National Council on Climate Change, focusing on integrating human rights into climate governance. Dr.

Iniobong Abiola Awe, representing the Minister of Environment, reaffirmed the government's commitment to inclusive climate policies. Dr.

Omotenioye Majekodunmi noted visible evidence of climate change in Nigeria, including floods and desertification.
