Professor Advocates for Tax Education in Nigeria

During the 61st inaugural lecture at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Professor Abdullahi Zubairu, Dean of the Faculty of Administration, called for comprehensive tax education to enhance Nigerians' understanding of taxation and its societal importance. He noted that despite several reforms, Nigeria's tax system underperforms due to a lack of adequate education, which makes taxation appear coercive rather than voluntary.

Zubairu emphasized that citizens must be fully aware of their tax obligations and the benefits of compliance, which can lead to improved public services. He recommended a robust tax reform framework that includes transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, aiming to transform the tax system into a financial tool that reflects a social contract between the state and its citizens.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Sa Adatu Hassan Liman and Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics Prof. Maikano Ari supported the discussion, highlighting the need for a clear understanding of the social contract regarding resource allocation and public services.
