Kwara Varsity Advocates AI for Nigeria's Tax System

During the maiden edition of the Isiaq Famil Foundation's annual accounting lecture held in Kwara State, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria called for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into Nigeria's tax administration system. Dr.

Adesola Okunola, representing the institute's registrar and chief executive, highlighted Nigeria's low tax-to-GDP ratio of approximately 9.5%, which is significantly lower than that of peer economies. She attributed this to systemic inefficiencies and a lack of citizen compliance, emphasizing the need to build trust and simplify the tax process.

Okunola noted that AI has already transformed global tax administration, with applications in fraud detection and real-time compliance monitoring. The lecture also addressed key elements of the proposed 2025 tax reform agenda, including the consolidation of multiple taxes and the introduction of a unified framework to reduce compliance burdens.

Alhaji Kolawole Balogun reaffirmed the foundation's commitment to advancing accounting education and supporting professional development.
