National Assembly Plans State Police to Prevent Abuse

Opeyemi Bamidele, a leader in the Nigerian Senate representing Ekiti Central, stated on Sunday that the National Assembly envisions a state police system designed to be free from abuse. This announcement coincided with the celebration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's 74th birthday.

Bamidele emphasized the need for a decentralized police model that serves the interests of all citizens, regardless of their status. He commended Tinubu for fostering synergy within the National Assembly and addressing the ongoing security challenges in the country.

The proposed police framework aims to empower sub-national authorities, ensuring effective governance even in remote areas. Bamidele noted that the National Assembly will prioritize the development of this new police framework, which will include mechanisms to prevent the abuse of power by political classes, reinforce justice administration, and discourage a culture of impunity, thereby preserving fundamental human rights.
