NELFUND and NASS Expand Student Loan Scheme to 7 Million

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the National Assembly (NASS) have announced plans to expand the student loan scheme to target 7 million beneficiaries. Akintund Sawyerr, Managing Director of NELFUND, stated that the program has already supported 1.6 million students and disbursed 282 billion Naira.

The initiative aims to transform access to education in Nigeria, with a focus on sensitizing the public about the benefits of the program. Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin emphasized the importance of informing potential beneficiaries about the scheme's impact.

The campaign will cover all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, aiming to deepen awareness of the loan scheme. Hon Ifeoluwa Eyindero, Chairman of the House Committee on Student Loan and Scholarship, noted that the program indirectly impacts nearly 10 million lives, considering an average family size of five.

The committee remains committed to ensuring equitable access to education and reducing financial barriers for students.
