Students Cite Delays in NELFUND Access in South-East

Students from tertiary institutions in Anambra, Ebonyi, and Enugu have reported low participation in the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), citing delays in disbursement as a primary concern. They expressed fears regarding indebtedness and uncertainty over repayment, alongside inadequate sensitization about the scheme.

Bethel Okolo, President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC), noted that slow processing of applications has led many students to pay their school fees upfront due to the late arrival of funds. He emphasized that despite the loan being interest-free, the uncertainty surrounding repayment creates apprehension among students.

Cletus Ikeuwa, SUG President at the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), acknowledged the benefits of the loan but highlighted that irregular payment of monthly upkeep allowances has discouraged participation. He stated that students depend on these stipends for their welfare, and the inconsistency undermines the initiative's effectiveness.
